I’m embarking on an effort to catalog and organize all the books in my library.
Along the way, I started thinking about how and where I started digging into leading people and learning about leadership at the University of Minnesota under thinkers & mentors.
Some of these books are 25+ years old at this point (note - I haven’t unpacked yet my original copy of “The Leadership Challenge”)
Looking at this stack of books, I realized from the very beginning of my learning journey, I was learning …
‼️ Leaders need to start with having character.
🤔 Knowing yourself is foundational to lead well.
💯 EQ is a must have and must be developed in an ongoing manner.
⭐️ Change IS the job of leaders - ideally for a greater good (that’s my mental model).
⚠️ Leadership isn’t for the faint of heart & is rarely easy.
❤️ Caring is a leadership skill you can’t delegate to others. (And leaders DO care.)
I didn’t expect the memories of when I embarked upon my leadership journey to be so vivid … and my bookshelves are more than books to me. They are learning moments … gifts that warmed my heart & challenged my mind … the powerful reminder that books can shape who you become if you spend quality time with them.
