📚Week #47 of 52 of reading in 2024

📚Week #47 of 52 … one week closer to the end of 2024 & five more books added to my list for this year.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

I feel like half the people I talk to about books have read or are reading this book … and I get why. I started it & had to ask my husband every night not to let me read all night …. I devoured this one. If you like books with a twist, this book is it.

Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't By Jeffrey Pfeffer

This is my second book by Jeffrey Pfeffer read this year. I appreciate how he challenges the too often romanticized aspect of leadership AND I appreciate there were the lenses of identity with some of the recommendations. What works for men doesn’t always work for women, etc.

A few of my highlights: https://amzn.to/4eWbRZr

👀 Not having a sense of control over your work environment causes stress & anxiety.

🤔 An assumption to let go of: the world is a just place

‼️ Sometimes you need to break the rules … find your ways to stand out.

🤯 Attitudes follow behavior.

❤️ Being nice to people is effective.

⏱️ Giving time & attention to others is an important way to build relationships.

🤔 Reputation damage is difficult to overcome.

🤯 Sometimes you need to give people a graceful way to change their minds.

🤔 The idea of “power withdrawal symptoms”

What Does It Feel Like by Sophie Kinsella

She is one of my favorite “beach read” authors … and this one wasn’t a beach read. (I’m glad my husband warned me.). It was a powerful reminder of how our lives can change & those that support us when we can’t do things alone.

Revenge of the Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

First, I listened & read this book. I had forgotten how much I love how Malcolm does his audio books - with clips & voice actors. It’s such a powerful way to listen.

‼️ The magic third … if you don’t know what it is, go learn!

🤔 The power of how we are shaped

We need to pay more attention to the songs we are singing.

😡 The overstory that STILL limits what people think women can accomplish

🤯 So many things are connected together that we don’t see … and sometimes when we try to fix one problem, we make a bigger one.

“Flawed: Why Perfectionism is a Challenge for Management” by Greg Chasson

I’m not sure how this one made it to my TBR list & I am glad it did. From concepts like cognitive rigidity to communication styles, it provided me a new way to view some situations.

‼️ Be wary of those who hold unreasonable and rigid outcomes.

🤔 Organizational cultures do impact the success or not of those in it.

💯 Healthy expectations are not unreasonable or rigid.

⭐️ High expectations are distinct from perfectionism, as they are flexible and healthy.

⁉️ Should statements are the most toxic form of the all-or-none bias.

🤔 Unsolicited advice is always received as criticism. This is a powerful reminder that criticism is a matter of perspective.
