Week #36 of 52

Week #36 of 52 of reading for 2024. I finished one nonfiction & one fiction.

“The Social Animal” by David Brooks

I think I’ve read almost all of his books at this point. The writing style of this book kept me hooked on it. I learned new things & was reminded of others.

‼️ We need people who help us see what might be possible.

🤔 Mediocre people want easy practice; great achievers want deliberate & critical feedback

💯 Trust reduces friction and lowers transaction costs. People in companies filled with trust move, flexibly, and cohesively.

Mental character helps you figure out what kind of problem you have in front of you and what sort of rules you should use to address it.

😳 The dishonesty of niceness. Sometimes the desire to not cause pain is actually the unwillingness to have an unpleasant conversation.

People hate uncertainty and rush to judgment.

❤️ We can choose small acts of service to prepare us for the moments when large acts of sacrifice are required.

⭐️ Relationships are the seedbed of character.

🤔Flourishing depends on unconscious skills that serve as a prerequisite for conscious accomplishments

“The Briar Club” by Kate Quinn

I love historical fiction with a twist of mystery that keeps you guessing. From being reminded how wonderfully fascinating people are to laughing out loud at points, it was just the fiction book I needed the last few weeks.
