📚 Week 34 of 52 of reading in 2024

3 books that helped me think about the power of reflection, the importance of creating spaces for important conversations & cultivating conditions for thriving in uncertainty.

“Ask” by Jeff Wetzler

I love a book that brings new concepts to my toolbox, bring others back to my thinking, & even brings in useful parenting tools.

Research + practical + call to action = my favorite type of book.

‼️ Choose curiosity. How can you awaken your curiosity to make new discoveries & unexpected connections?

📘 Few of us are ever taught how to express ourselves in ways that are both kind & constructive.

🤓 Connective curiosity … care is curiosity’s Latin root

⁉️ Do you wear your judgment on your sleeve?

💯 If you really want to get curious, surround yourself with people who will challenge you & help you see your blind spots.

❓ How do you make it easier for people to tell you hard things?

🎧 3 channels of listening: content, emotion, & action

‼️ We need to radiate resilience to cultivate spaces for honesty & candor.

⭐️ When someone has given you the gift of candid, thoughtful answers to your questions, you owe them the next two steps: to reflect upon what you’ve heard & decide what you’ll do with it.

🤔 When you feel newly challenged, stuck, or stymied, remember that you have merely reached the edge of your current competence level, & now you have an opportunity to grow.

💯 The answers we need often reside in the people all around us, if only we ask.

🤓 The concept of the “mastery spiral”

🤯 Create curiosity rituals

Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller

✔️ Work can be both frustrating and fulfilling.

‼️ Be careful of overvaluing some work (and those who do it) over others.

⁉️ How are you using the power you have in your life? In your work?

❤️ Treating people as human beings with dignity rather than interchangeable resources means being transparent with information, offering extensive two-way communication & seeking to genuinely persuade rather than control people’s responses.

The Transformation Myth: Leading Your Organization through Uncertain Times (Management on the Cutting Edge) by Anh PhillipsGerald Kane, & Rich Nanda

‼️ Our current environment requires “unlearning” practices & processes that were fundamental to the successes of prior versions of the organization.

💯 Navigating the nature of disruption is a crucible of leadership.

🤔 The “Respond - Regroup - Thrive” model

🧠 Leaders and organizations with a growth mindset will be better positioned to cope with disruption.

⭐️ 4 key capabilities that we consistently find in digitally resilient organizations—nimbleness, scalability, stability, and optionality.

🤓 Different types of teamwork

— Handing things off (when problems are routine, well understood)

— Synchronized work (more complex, less routine)

— Coordinated work (work together but clearly defined roles)

— Interdependent work (truly complex, novel problems)
